Birthing Alternatives

Expectant women are increasingly allowed more choices in the types of environments in which they wish to deliver their babies. Birthing options should be discussed when selecting a health care provider. Keep in mind that many of these options are limited to low-risk, uncomplicated deliveries.

Birthing rooms allow women to stay in the same bed for labor, delivery and recovery. They are more cozy than typical hospital rooms but are often in high demand and assigned on a first come, first served basis. They typically have a birthing bed that converts from a comfortable bed to one with a raised back that supports the woman in a semi-squat position during labor.

Some progressive hospitals boast family-centered care in which certain ASPO/Lamaze criteria must be met. Some of these criteria include patient rooms with comfortable furnishings, private bathroom and shower as well as space to accommodate medical personnel and siblings and other family member.

Birthing chairs are used for squatting deliveries. It supports the woman in a sitting position. Advocates believe that with the help of gravity, labor time is reduced.

Underwater births, while not accepted by most in the medical community because of the potential for the baby to drown, are invigorating for women who have tried it. Delivering underwater is supposed to simulate the womb.

Some women prefer home birth to sterile hospital environments. The risk, of course, is that in case of an emergency, necessary facilities may be far away.
